INDIA-INUNGUR-TAMIL NADU
In July 2005, the Headmistress Penelope Kirk, established links with a small school in Inungur, Tamil Nadu, Southern India. She spent a month working with the teachers and pupils at the school and took resources and gifts from the pupils and parents of Prince’s Mead. On her return, the parents and governors pledged to continue to offer support to the teachers and children.
Since then many events have been held at the school to raise funds for the project. The children have been actively involved in fund raising and the PMA (Prince’s Mead Association) has raised several thousand pounds for the benefit of the Indian children. One family within the school is currently funding a teacher at Inungur school. They pay her salary and ensure her job is secure within the school. In addition, the Governors pay the salary of three teachers and two teaching assistants each year.
Since the school established its partnership, great progress has been made in building a new school for primary aged school children. This will ensure that the children educated in the nursery can continue with their education. The donations made by Prince’s Mead have built a toilet block for the staff and children, established water connections throughout the new building, installed drinking water fountains, connected electricity and built a security fence.
The new school building was partly completed and opened in June 2007. There are now 93 children being educated in the new building.
In 2008 the PMA held a Race Night to raise money for much needed playground facilities for the nursery and primary children. Over £4000 was raised enabling us to provide wonderful equipment for the children. We also hope to provide outside lighting and a motor pump to water the saplings in the new playground.
