Founder of Alfie’s Wish Joins us for Assembly

30th January 25

We were delighted to welcome Charlotte Butler, the founder of Alfie’s Wish, to our school assembly last week. Charlotte shared the heartfelt story behind the charity and its mission to support children with cancer by providing memorable experiences for them and their families.

Alfie’s Wish was chosen by our pupils, alongside Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, as one of our Charities of the Year. All pupils took part in a vote at the start of the Michaelmas Term, carefully considering which causes they wanted to support through their fundraising efforts, from a list of nominations that parents had put forward. Alfie’s Wish resonated deeply with many of our pupils, and Charlotte’s visit helped them to understand the impact their efforts will have on children and families facing incredibly challenging circumstances.

During the assembly, Charlotte spoke movingly about her son, Alfie, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour just a few weeks after his first Christmas and sadly passed away before his 6th birthday. His brave journey inspired her to create the charity, ensuring that other families in similar situations receive moments of joy and respite. She explained how the charity arranges special days out, giving children and their families cherished memories away from hospital treatments and medical appointments.

Reflecting on Charlotte’s visit, our Headmaster shared his thoughts:

“It was lovely to welcome Charlotte Butler to school today to talk about her charity, Alfie’s Wish. She set up the charity 5 years ago after losing her son, Alfie, to cancer. Her story was incredibly moving and it was clear that even though Alfie’s life was short, he had such a big impact on everyone who knew him.

Her charity helps other families who are going through the same heart-breaking situation by making their wish come true. She explained that when families are supporting a child who is fighting cancer, it’s important to be able to make memories and enjoy those special family moments too. By arranging and funding days out to theme parks, sporting events, museums or anything they wish for, it means their dream really does come true.

I was proud of how our children listened to Charlotte and even more proud of their determination to raise money for a very worthy charity and one which they all chose last term. I’m hoping that she will be able to return with Star, their charity mascot, to take part in our Colour Run later this year.”

The pupils listened intently, asking thoughtful questions and showing great enthusiasm for the fundraising opportunities ahead. Inspired by Charlotte’s words, the children are already full of ideas to raise money for this wonderful cause. From sponsored challenges to creative events, the Prince’s Mead community is eager to make a difference.

We are incredibly proud of our pupils for their compassion and commitment to helping others. Supporting both Alfie’s Wish and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance this year will not only teach them about the power of giving but will also instill a sense of responsibility and kindness that will stay with them for years to come.

A huge thank you to Charlotte for visiting and sharing Alfie’s story with us. We look forward to an exciting year of fundraising and making a real impact in our wider community.
