About
Prince’s Mead is an independent co-educational nursery and day school for children aged 3 to 11, set within the South Downs National Park, just outside Winchester.
We offer a truly exceptional start to a child’s educational journey, where academic ambition goes hand in hand with a happy, well-rounded childhood. We believe children flourish when they feel inspired and supported. That’s why our outstanding pastoral care sits at the heart of everything we do, nurturing each child as an individual.
Our broad curriculum and vibrant co-curricular programme give every pupil the chance to thrive — in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field, or exploring our extensive outdoor spaces.
Central to all of this is the strength of our warm, inclusive community. Families and staff work in close partnership to create an environment where every child feels a sense of belonging and is encouraged to grow with curiosity, kindness and courage.

Head's Welcome
Adam King

As Head of Prince’s Mead, I consider myself to be very fortunate and privileged to lead a school that has such a strong sense of community and is ambitious for its future.
Our broad curriculum allows every child to enjoy a large variety of subjects and be inspired by specialist, enthusiastic teachers.
Our grounds are simply stunning, with over 13 acres providing the children with space in which to be energetic, creative and reflective.
Finally, our pastoral care is second to none, with committed and dedicated staff creating a caring environment that provides every child with a happy and nurturing setting.
Children face so many challenges in an ever-changing world. However, I believe that Prince’s Mead can provide the perfect start to your child’s life both educationally and emotionally.
I look forward to showing you around this very special place and giving you the opportunity to see for yourself.

We are 'excellent'
ISI Inspection Results
Prince’s Mead was rated ‘Excellent’ in all available categories by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) at our last full inspection in May 2023.
Like all UK independent schools, Prince’s Mead is inspected regularly by the ISI to ensure that high standards are maintained. The inspectors looked at all aspects of Prince’s Mead life: they observed lessons, conducted interviews with staff, pupils and governors, and examined samples of pupils’ work. We were thrilled by the feedback gathered from the pupil and parent surveys.

Our History
Established 1949
Prince’s Mead began with a simple vision: to provide an exceptional education for the children of Winchester College staff. In the late 1940s, Miss Crystal Holme opened a small school in her home on Christchurch Road, and by 1952, she relocated to Edgar Road to accommodate growing demand. Inspired by her brother’s school, King’s Mead, she named her own flourishing school for younger children Prince’s Mead.
From those humble beginnings, Prince’s Mead has continued to grow and evolve and a significant milestone came in 1999 when the school moved to the stunning Worthy Park House, a Georgian country house set in 13 acres of Hampshire countryside.
Today, Prince’s Mead is a thriving, modern preparatory school that blends heritage and innovation, yet the warmth, curiosity, and pioneering spirit of Miss Holme’s original school remain at its heart.
