Digging for historical treasure

9th May 25

Year 4 had a fantastic day on Tuesday. While some children enjoyed a Classics trip to Lord Wandsworth College, those who remained at school were treated to an incredible History morning.

Our brilliant Games Coach, Mr Brown, is not only passionate about sport – his knowledge of History is also outstanding. A keen metal detectorist for over 40 years, Mr Brown generously gave up his time to share some of his fascinating discoveries with the children.

He showcased a treasure trove of artefacts, some dating as far back as the Stone Age. The collection included medieval animal bells, a brooch, belt buckle, coins, a pouring spout, a Tudor purse bar, toy cannons from the Georgian era, flint predating the dinosaurs, and detailed silver pennies from the year 1200. The children were captivated by the stories behind each item and were amazed to learn that one of Mr Brown’s finds is even on display at the British Museum!

The morning continued with a hands-on session where the children learned how to use a metal detector and a probe to search for buried metal. Exploring Gray’s Wood, they took turns practicing their new skills, and a few lucky treasure hunters even found metal objects of their own.

We are so grateful to Mr Brown for such an inspiring morning. His passion and generosity may well have sparked a new generation of metal detectorists!
