Fashioning the Future: A Creative STEAM Collaboration in Sustainable Design

Pupils across the school enjoyed an exciting and inspiring STEAM Day this week, delivered in collaboration with the Winchester School of Art and the University of Southampton, and joined by visiting pupils from KES Prep in Romsey who also took part. The day brought science, technology, engineering, art, and maths together in a vibrant exploration of sustainable fashion.

Instead of following their usual timetable, pupils immersed themselves in a full day design challenge that culminated in a lively and colourful fashion show. Working with guidance from teachers, and a dedicated team of parent volunteers, pupils transformed pre loved clothing into imaginative, runway ready creations.

The day began with a talk from Rosann Murray-Langdon, a specialist at the Winchester School of Art, who introduced pupils to the science behind fabrics, their recyclability, and the environmental impact of the clothing industry. Pupils learned how small changes - such as swapping clothes, supporting charity shops, and re designing old garments - can significantly reduce the amount of textile waste sent to landfill each year.

Each year group embraced a different theme, including camouflage, Team GB, disco, emergency services, explorers, and rock bands. Pupils worked in teams to reimagine garments brought from home, cutting, stitching, embellishing, and innovating with impressive creativity and enthusiasm.

A highlight of the day was the Design & Technology workshop, where an “army” of parent helpers supported pupils with sewing machines, fixing fastenings, and refining final details. Their skill, energy, and encouragement helped pupils bring their ideas to life.

Jemma Chinappen, Head of Science, praised the cross curricular nature of the day:

“STEAM Day is always a highlight, but this year’s focus on sustainable fashion added a powerful real world message. The children didn’t just learn about the environmental science behind textiles, they applied it in such a creative and meaningful way. It was wonderful to see science, design, and imagination come together so brilliantly.”

Rosann from the Winchester School of Art also reflected on the pupils’ ingenuity:

“I was hugely impressed by the children’s enthusiasm and their willingness to experiment with materials. Their up cycled outfits were thoughtful, bold, and full of personality. It’s inspiring to see young people engaging with sustainability in such a hands on way.”

The day concluded with a joyful fashion show, where pupils from Prince’s Mead and KES Prep proudly modelled their creations to cheers and applause. The runway was packed with colour, confidence, and clever design choices, reflecting hours of teamwork and problem solving.

A warm thank you goes to our partners at the Winchester School of Art, the University of Southampton, the visiting pupils and staff from KES Prep, Winchester Hospice for their generous donation of textiles, and the incredible parent volunteers who helped make the workshop a hive of creativity.

The event was a true celebration of curiosity, collaboration, and innovation and a reminder that small actions can make a big difference to our planet.
