Prince’s Mead Marks Mental Health Awareness Week with Heartfelt “This Is Our Place” Art Installation

Prince’s Mead first embraced the theme “This Is Our Place” during Children’s Mental Health Week in February, an initiative led by Place2Be encouraging children to reflect on belonging, safety, and the environments—both physical and emotional, where we feel most at home.

Pupils and staff from across the school took part in a collaborative art project designed to celebrate these ideas. Each member of the community was invited to create a mini canvas in the shape of a heart, choosing a base colour that represented their own special place. For some, this was a physical location; for others, it was a feeling, a memory, or a moment in time where they felt safe, valued, and truly themselves.

The activity encouraged thoughtful conversations about wellbeing, identity, and connection. Classrooms buzzed with creativity as children explored what belonging means to them, using colour, pattern, and symbolism to express their ideas. Staff joined in too, contributing their own reflections and adding to the sense of unity.

Now, timed to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week, the finished installation has been unveiled - a striking rainbow display of individual hearts, each one unique, yet collectively forming a vibrant celebration of the Prince’s Mead community. The artwork stands as a reminder that while everyone’s “place” may look different, each one is equally important and contributes to the rich tapestry of school life.

Reflecting on the project, Gillian Jones, Head of Wellbeing, shared her gratitude:

“A huge thank you goes to Caro O'Brien for her artistic inspiration, Saffi Mant for creating the plaque and to Nikki Crook and the Estates team for putting this wonderful vision together and creating our stunning rainbow display of “Our Place.” It has been a fantastic way to celebrate Mental Health Week and remind us all of the importance of belonging, connection, and feeling safe.”

The completed artwork is now proudly on display in the dining hall, where it can be enjoyed by pupils, staff, and visitors alike. It serves as a colourful and meaningful reminder of the importance of belonging, connection, and feeling safe—values at the very heart of Prince’s Mead.
