In 2024 Prince’s Mead will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee. The school has been at the heart of the Winchester community since it was formed by Crystal Holme back in 1949 to educate the children of the staff at Winchester College.
Over the years, Prince’s Mead has grown from a small cohort of pupils in Crystal’s home into a prominent co-educational nursery, pre-prep, and prep school, known for its family ethos, commitment to academic rigor, and holistic development of generations of students.
Originally located in central Winchester and named to follow suit with the senior school that Crystal’s brother taught at (King’s Mead), Prince’s Mead relocated to its present location at Worthy Park House in 1999 where it is now home to 300 pupils, 90 staff members, 1 dog, 1 tortoise, 5 chickens, and a hive of bees.
Adam King, who became the sixth Head in 2022, reflects: “In reaching our 75th year, we look back on the shared journey that has shaped Prince’s Mead and celebrate the enduring impact that the school has had on individuals and the community. We also look ahead to a future where a love of learning, curiosity about the world, and the spirit of community remain at the heart of our purpose.”
At the end of last year, we launched a call for Prince’s Mead Alumni to sign up to our new dedicated Alumni community and help us celebrate three-quarters of a century with an Alumni Open House on Friday 3rd May and our Diamond Jubilee Garden Party on Friday 7th June.
This year will be all about celebrating the stories that make Prince’s Mead the school it is today. From past pupils who reminisce about their first days of school, past and present staff members who are proud to be part of the school’s rich legacy of academic excellence, past and present parents who have spent so many hours at the “school gate” and pitch sideline, to current pupils who learn, play and make friends for life in the spectacular grounds of Worthy Park House overlooking the Itchen Valley.
